Surgical Technologist
The Surgical Technologist is a qualified surgical scrub, who under the surgeon’s direct supervision assists in surgical operations. It is the responsibility of the Surgical Technologist to set up the instruments and equipment required for that specific procedure. They install both sterile and non-sterile equipment, as well as change it to ensure proper working. They pass instruments to the surgeon during the surgical operation, anticipate the surgeon’s needs and respond rapidly to emergencies by supplying the necessary supplies or equipment.
Not only do surgical technicians perform in the surgical scrub role, but they may also serve as a second circulator (identify, place, and prepare the patient for surgery) or as a second aid (maintain retraction, cut suture, or hold clamps applied by the surgeon). They can become Qualified First Assistants with more instruction.
